With the help of a STEAM AIR grant from the NH State Council on the Arts, students at Conval High School had two unique opportunities this fall: a visit by comic artist Marek Bennett to the art and science classes, and a live owl presentation from Eyes on Owls. Students used these two experiences to create artwork which will be on display at the Peterborough Town Library for the month of February, with a reception held on Tuesday, February 7th from 6-8pm.

ConVal teacher Amanda Bastoni explains what the students learned from Marek’s presentation, “Marek demonstrated techniques he uses for sketching from life, communicating a science message through art, and his own experiences making comics.” Marek’s visit went along well with a visit from the owls.

While at the Eyes on Owls presentation, students practiced live sketching, took reference photos, and learned biological facts about the owls. Photographs by ConVal senior Mackenzie Burnside are intimate portraits of the owls and turn the owls themselves into art objects. Her work demonstrates how beneficial the visit was for the students.

All of the art on display at the Peterborough Town Library represents the students’ experiences with Marek and the owls and the combination of science and art. The exhibit go up on February 4th, and will remain on display for the rest of the month during regular library hours.

Eyes on Owls will be giving a live owl presentation at the Peterborough Town Library on Tuesday, February 28th at 10:30am . The public is invited to register for this opportunity beginning February 1st.
