I could go on and on about this show – hopefully you’ve AT LEAST heard of it? Today I’m talking Gilmore Girls!
I started watching with my Mom when I was in high school and always wished that our relationship was as close as Rory and Lorelai! I vividly remember finding an empty study room (with a TV) at the library at college so I could make sure I didn’t miss an episode, even when I didn’t have cable or internet at whatever apartment I was living in during my college years. So, to say that Gilmore Girls means a lot to me is an understatement.
There is so much to talk about here. If you’ve never seen Gilmore Girls (written, directed, and produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino), there are 8 seasons that ran on the WB and then Netflix did a super special 4-episode mini season called “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” just a few years ago – which caught up with the whole Gilmore Girl cast as if they had still been living their lives without us watching for the nine years that they were off the screen. While I totally held a watch party complete with a ton of junk food and party favors, A Year in the Life was not nearly as good as the original series, but you have to watch it – it finishes out the story (well kind-of).
Okay, lets dig into this. We’ll start off with starry-eyed Rory Gilmore. Before we even talk about the actress that played Rory, the character herself is a voracious reader. There are so many lists of all the books mentioned in Gilmore Girls or all the book that Rory is seen holding or heard talking about – here is one that will keep you busy for a year at least (it’s 339 books)!
Alexis Bledel plays Rory, and if you are a fan of 2000’s movies about strong friendships and summer romances, you may recognize her from the two Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies – based on the books by Ann Brashares and available on Overdrive/Libby. She is also in a wonderful adaptation of Tuck Everlasting – based on the novel by Natalie Babbitt (available on OverDrive/Libby and from PTL). She also has a small part in Mad Men (we’ve got the whole show on DVD at PTL) – which is an excellent series to check out if you’ve never seen it, and most recently Bledel is starring in Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood available on OverDrive/Libby. You can also see her in I’m Reed Fish and Emily and Tim (both available on Hoopla) and with the amazing Saoirse Ronan (we just got Little Women in on DVD at PTL) in Violet & Daisy (adding this to my watch list ASAP) also available to watch on Hoopla!
Lauren Graham plays Lorelai Gilmore, mother of Rory and quick-witted inn keeper extraordinaire. If you love her and Gilmore Girls-esk family dramas, you need to check out Parenthood – one of my all-time favorite shows! It’s cast is also fantastic and I could go on and on about it forever – and who doesn’t want to have a backyard for family dinners like the Bravermans!?
Graham is most recently starring in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist which I talked a little bit about in my first Blog Post and you should totally check out too! If you love the music from the show, Hoopla has all of the first season’s songs available by episode to download too! You can also download Graham’s memoir Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between) from OverDrive/Libby – pro tip: the audiobook is read by Graham – score!
And we can’t forget Emily Gilmore – mother of Loreili and grandma to Rory – played by Kelly Bishop. She basically plays the same role as she did in DIRTY DANCING as Baby’s mother! Hey Dirty Dancing fans: you can listen to Patrick Swayze’s memoir The Time of My Life on Hoopla and have you seen the Netflix series The Movies that Made Us yet? Dirty Dancing is one of four featured movies! Anyway, Bishop does an exceptional job playing a rich old white woman who you love to hate and would love to see a mash up with Lady Grantham from Downton Abbey – I just had to mention because I love this poster and I also love Downton and you should watch that too. There are a ton of cool read-alikes and supplemental reading for Downton fans available on OverDrive/Libby (Hoopla has a Downton Abbey Cocktail Book) and PTL has all of the series available on DVD!
Bishop also starred in the short-lived show Bunheads (also written by Gilmore Girls writer/producer Amy Sherman-Palladino) alongside Sutton Foster (check out her music on Hoopla) who had a small part in the A Year in the Life Netflix mini-series and currently stars in Younger, another one of my fave new-ish show about the world of books! Foster’s character in Younger is a 40-something pretending to be a 20-something to get back into work in publishing – and has a ton of funny book-ish jokes… if you like that sort of thing… it also stars Hilary Duff (check out her music on Hoopla) so that’s fun too!
And how could I not mention the fabulous writer/director/producer Amy Sherman-Palladino again! Her most recent creation – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is FANTASTIC! If you have even the slightest interest in the 1950’s, female stand-up comedians and/or loved the show Monk (Tony Shalhoub stars as the father of Mrs. Maisel) then you have to check it out on Amazon Prime! Hoopla also has the soundtracks to each season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel available for download!
I have to pause now, to take a moment to say to all you already Gilmore Girls fans – I am 100% team Jess all the way. And that being said, we have to talk about the actor playing Jess – Milo Ventimiglia!
He currently stars in SERIOUSLY one of my all-time favorite shows – This is Us!!! This show is so good!!! I can’t use enough exclamation points to get my point across!!! PTL has seasons 1-3 on DVD – check them out today! Ventimiglia is also in the new movie adaption of the Art of Racing in the Rain – based on the book by Garth Stein (available on Hoopla and OverDrive/Libby) and played Rocky Balboa’s son in the sixth and eighth installments of the Rocky series (I had to look that one up). And, if you love his voice too – Ventimiglia narrates Edward’s Eyes a short story by Patricia MacLachlan also available on Hoopla.
And of course, there is Sookie St. James played by Melissa McCarthy. I love that I know Melissa from before she was in Bridesmaids. The kind of Sookie funny appeals to me way more than any of her other roles, and will always hold a place in my heart. I did love her in the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters available on DVD from PTL and there are tons of Ghosbusters comics available on Hoopla. And, I am excited to mention that it looks like McCarthy is going to be playing one of my favorite Disney villains, Ursula in the new live-action remake of the Little Mermaid!
Last, but not least, one of Stars Hollow, CT’s favorite locals: Kirk! Sean Gunn’s character started out as just a bit really, and in the first few episodes he actually showed up as different characters with different names… but once he was given the role of Kirk, there was no turning back. And this is, of course, where I can mention that I already mentioned Gunn in my last round-up for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies (where I also mentioned Gilmore Girls – see how this all works)! You can also see Gunn in a really cute movie, The Giant Mechanical Man (available on Hoopla) and also starring Jenna Fisher… uh-oh, I might have my next round-up idea…
Thanks for reading folks! Until next time, I hope you’re all staying healthy and make sure to keep washing those hands!
