Book Review: Dare to Disappoint

DareToDisappointThis is my new favorite book.  Dare to Disappoint: Growing Up in Turkey by Ozge Samanci

It’s a graphic novel about growing up.  (In Turkey.)

Universal subjects include being disciplined by your adored second grade teacher and longing to go to school with your older sibling.  You want to be there so much, you watch that sibling walk to school with your binoculars—and, later, you walk to the school and join the class when you’re supposed to be going to the store for your mother.

Like Satrapi’s Persepolis, a memoir about coming of age during the Islamic Revolution in Iran– Samanci’s autobiographical memoir also gives you a view of what growing up in Turkey was like during times of political turmoil.  Both books give readers honest, individual interpretations of the authors’ lives and both are humorous, heartfelt, genuine, and totally original in the way they combine words and artwork.
