Niemi’s work represents his continued interest and search for understanding of the natural world around him. Residing in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, he takes most of his inspiration from the woods and fields, the hills, the mountains, and the many varied bodies of water. Niemi states, “I own just over 11 acres of land, much of it wooded, and many of my ideas come from exploring this enchanting environment. One never knows what Nature has in store, and one can only hope to capture in their work a glimmer of what Nature makes known to us.”
This type of documentation of the world around us is particularly important when you think about how climate is beginning to change our landscape. Niemi believes that “some of the scenes I paint might not be around for future generations to enjoy and experience. It is with that humility that I approach my painting, realizing what a great privilege and responsibility it is to be an artist and it is with that mindset that I endeavor to capture with paint the beauty that Nature has chosen to reveal to us.” Between the natural shifts in seasons and the changes due to climate, these paintings will forever show how this area looked at this time. Niemi finds the following quote to be relevant in his approach to studying and painting Nature:
"There may be more to learn by climbing the same mountain a hundred times than by climbing a hundred different mountains" -attributed to the writer, Richard Nelson
