August 23rd from 6-8pm//

The public are invited to view Welch’s work during normal library hours in the Art Corner through the month of August and to join the artist for a reception on Tuesday, August 23rd from 6-8pm.

Peterborough native Lauryn Welch often finds herself thinking about how the colors and patterns that people wear can change how others think about them. She has been “fascinated by the emotional tug of color and pattern” since childhood, and uses it as the basis and inspiration for her artwork. During the month of August, a selection of her work is on display at the Peterborough Town Library. Welch’s current body of work focuses on both the human form and landscape using naturally occurring patterns as inspiration. Welch describes her artistic process: “I identify with artists such as David Bowie and Cindy Sherman who deal with issues of evolving identity through performance. Approaching patterning and camouflage from a variety of practices has given me a nuanced understanding of how mimicry and adaptation are used in contemporary culture, as well as an awareness of how I personally use these tools to maneuver my way through life”.

Welch is a graduate of ConVal (2009) and started her undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at Rhode Island School of Design, and finished her BFA at SUNY Purchase College in 2015. For more information about Welch and her artwork visit her website: www.laurynwelch.com.
