How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children.
Angela Hanscom, author of Balanced and Barefoot, will be speaking at the Lucy Hurlin Theater at the ConVal High School on October 15th at 6:30 pm. Prior to her appearance, the River Center and the Peterborough Town Library have partnered to host a book group to read and discuss her book on October 8th at 6:30 at the Library. Join us as we read and discuss ways to provide our children the tools they need to thrive. Books are available at the Library now!
In her book, Ms. Hanscom, a pediatric occupational therapist and founder of TimberNook, talks about the importance of unrestricted outdoor play and how critical it is in fostering cognitive development and growth, as well as being immensely fun. Her research shows that sedentary lifestyles filled with television, video games, and computer screens are having an adverse effect on the health and well-being of children these days. Nature is the ultimate sensory experience, she contends, and her book provides strategies to help children thrive even in an urban environment.
