As part of the Big Community Read of The Soul of an Octopus, we are very excited to host the New England Aquarium for their Tidepool Alive program. Sy Montgomery completed much of the research for her book at the NEA!
The Tidepools Alive program involves live animals such as seastars, hermit crabs, snails, clams, mussels, and a live horseshoe crab. Each session starts with an Aquarium educator guiding the students through an imaginary tidepool trip. The students discover tidepool animals and learn about their body parts, mimic their behavior, and even dress up in a seastar costume. Next, the students are allowed to touch and hold the live animals (educators rotate them in groups so everyone sees everything). They end the program with the horseshoe crab and answering any questions the children might have.
