October 28, 2019 –The Peterborough Town Library will host a panel discussion about tough topics and how to discuss them with children. With the right tools, a tough topic can become an opportunity for mutual exploration and discussion. The panel includes parent-educator expert Bonnie Harris, kindergarten teacher Jen Christensen, 5th grade teacher Sarah Pope, school counselor Jenny Ahlquist, and children’s librarian Lisa Bearce. Each expert will share their tips on the best ways to discuss topics parents or caregivers may be uncomfortable with and how to facilitate an open conversation. The library will provide reading lists for particular topics such as immigration, war, homelessness, and discrimination.
“All families are different and need to make their make their own decisions about what constitutes a tough topic for them and when to address it, but we find many families would like to hear what other professionals and parents have experienced or recommend. The caregiver or parent is the first teacher, attending this program will give them useful tools, “ said children’s librarian Lisa Bearce.
The discussion will take place on Thursday November 14th at 6:30pm. There will be a moderated question and answer period following the panel discussion. The program is free and open to the public.
